Who does landscaping and lawn care in Carthage, TX?
Yard Dog Landscapes is a family-owned landscaping and lawn care company based in Longview, and Carthage is part of our East Texas service area. Miller Maines started the business in 2017. Today it is Miller plus a crew of four, the same crew every visit, and we never subcontract the work. We are fully insured and hold a 5.0 rating from 143 Google reviews. Send a quote request any time, and we will set up a free walkthrough and send a written, itemized estimate, usually within a day.
Carthage yards tend to fall into two groups. In town, around the courthouse square and the older streets, you get established lots under big pines and hardwoods, with St. Augustine in the shade and foundation beds that have filled in over the years. Out past the city limits, toward Lake Murvaul, Beckville or Gary, it is more often an acre or more, a long drive, a pasture edge, and a lawn that is part Bermuda and part whatever came up on its own. Under all of it is Piney Woods sand over red clay, so the top dries out fast and the subsoil holds water.
Carthage is a longer run than Kilgore or White Oak, so we plan the work around the drive. Bigger installs like sod, drainage, patios and walls are where the trip pays off, and we set the walkthrough up so we see the whole property, including where the water goes after a rain. For weekly mowing, we will tell you on the first call how scheduling works for your address before you sign up for anything.
What Carthage yards deal with
Sand on top, red clay below
Most Carthage lots have sandy loam over red clay. The surface dries out fast in July, and the clay underneath keeps low spots soggy after a long rain.
Acreage changes the job
Homes outside town often sit on an acre or more. Fence lines, outbuildings and long drives take more time than the open turf, so that is what we look at when we price mowing.
Pines drop all year
Loblolly pines drop needles year-round, heaviest in spring and fall, and the hardwoods unload in November. Beds under pines can take pine straw as mulch, but lawns under them need the needles cleared.
Shade and sun on one lot
Plenty of in-town lots have mature trees shading one part of the yard and open sun on another. That usually means St. Augustine in the shade and Bermuda in the sun, each mowed at its own height.
Services in Carthage
Every service we offer, with what matters for Carthage yards. The ones with a red outline are what people here ask us for most.
Lawn Maintenance
Carthage lawns are often a mix: St. Augustine under the trees out front, Bermuda in the open back, and on bigger lots a pasture edge that never got sodded.
From $65 per visitDrainage & Grading
Carthage soil is the classic East Texas setup, sandy loam on top and red clay underneath, so rain soaks in fast, hits the clay and moves sideways toward the slab and the low corner of the yard.
$2,000 to $3,750 most projectsSod Installation
If your Carthage lawn thinned out as the trees grew in, or you are starting from bare dirt on a new build, sod is the fast fix.
$1,500 to $4,700 most projectsLandscaping
On older Carthage homes, the usual story is good bones and tired beds: overgrown foundation shrubs, edges that melted into the lawn, and plants that quit years ago.
$900 to $3,600 most projectsLeaf Removal
Between the pines, post oaks and pecans in older Carthage yards, leaf season starts in October and does not really end until February.
By the hour hours estimated up frontChristmas Lights
Carthage sits inside our standard Christmas light range, so most homes start at $900.
From $900 most homesFertilization
On Carthage lots that run St. Augustine under the trees and Bermuda in the open, one bag rate across the whole yard does not work, because shaded St. Augustine needs a lighter hand while sunny Bermuda can use more.
From about $190 per visitHedge Trimming
Older Carthage homes often have foundation hedges of holly, ligustrum or boxwood that were sheared into boxes for years and went thin at the bottom.
$150 to $800 most jobsTree & Shrub Care
Mature Carthage yards tend to have crepe myrtles, azaleas and big shade trees, and each one wants pruning at a different time of year.
Free quoteTree Planting
On open Carthage lots, a shade tree on the west side of the house does the most work.
Free quoteFlower Bed Installation
Carthage beds either bake in full afternoon sun on open lots or sit in heavy shade under pines, so one plant list does not fit every yard.
$900 to $3,600 most planting projectsMulch Installation
With pines on so many Carthage lots, a lot of beds already collect needles, and pine straw makes a fine mulch on its own.
$600 to $2,400 most bedsIrrigation & Sprinkler Systems
Carthage has the classic East Texas profile, sandy loam over red clay, so long cycles flood the low side of the yard and leave the high side thirsty.

Patios in Carthage sink when they are laid on topsoil over clay that swells and shrinks with the weather.
$3,100 to $9,100 most projectsRetaining Walls
Even a modest slope behind a Carthage house can wash out a bed or push soil against a fence after a few hard rains.

What does landscaping cost in Carthage?
Our published ranges are a good starting point. Weekly mowing starts at $65 a visit for a typical yard, with acreage priced after we walk it. Most landscaping and planting projects land between $900 and $3,600, sod between $1,500 and $4,700, and drainage between $2,000 and $3,750. Your number comes from a free walkthrough and a written estimate.
How much are Christmas lights in Carthage?
Most homes start at $900. We supply the lights, custom-cut professional C9 lines to your roofline, install them, take them down after the season and store them until next year. We quote from a photo mock-up of your house, so you do not have to wait on a site visit to get a price.
My Carthage yard holds water after every rain. Can you fix that?
Usually, yes. Sandy topsoil over red clay lets water soak in fast and then stall on the clay, so it spreads sideways toward the slab or the low corner. We walk the yard, find where the water starts and where it can outlet, then price a regrade, a French drain or a downspout reroute. Most drainage projects run $2,000 to $3,750.
