What we do
Good landscaping here starts below the mulch. Most Longview yards sit on sandy loam over red clay, and plenty of them have deep pine shade in one spot and full afternoon sun in another. We walk the property, note where water runs and where the light falls, and lay out beds that fit the house and the way you use the yard. Plants get picked for that exact spot, not for whatever was on sale at the big-box store that week.
Then we build it. Beds get edged and prepped, heavy clay gets amended where it needs it, plants go in at the right depth, and every bed is finished with mulch or rock. We buy from regional growers, so the material is healthy and suited to the area. It's the same crew from the first shovel to the last rake, and we haul off the mess before we leave.

How the job goes
Fall is the best planting window in East Texas. From September to about Thanksgiving the soil stays warm while the air cools, so trees and shrubs build roots for months before they see summer heat. Spring works for summer color once the soil warms up, but anything woody planted in April spends its first summer just trying to survive.

Most of what we plant around Longview goes into sandy loam over red clay. Clay holds water for days after a soaking rain and bakes hard in a dry spell, so plants die from wet feet as often as from drought. We set trees and shrubs with the root flare at grade and backfill with native soil, not a pocket of bagged mix that turns into a bathtub.
Then there's the heat. A Longview July means weeks in the high 90s and soupy humidity, and petunias and impatiens are done by the Fourth. In the sun we lean on lantana, salvia, plumbago, vinca and knockout roses. Azaleas and hydrangeas go only where they're sited right, out of the worst afternoon sun.

When is the best time to plant shrubs and trees in East Texas?
Fall. From September through November the soil is still warm while the air cools off, and roots keep growing through most of our mild winter. A shrub planted in early October gets months of root growth before summer. One planted in April gets about eight weeks before the first 100-degree day. Keep watering through winter, especially before a hard freeze.
Do you put landscape fabric under mulch?
No. Mulch breaks down into soil, and on top of fabric that new soil becomes a seed bed. In two or three years weeds root through the sheet and the bed is a mess to pull. We edge clean and mulch at 1 to 1.5 inches instead. Fabric does belong under river rock and gravel, and we install it there.
Can I see a design before you build?
Yes. Our Landscape Design Preview gives you renderings of the space with a plant list and bed layout before anything goes in the ground. It's $199 for flower beds, $449 for hardscape and $999 for the full property, with one round of revisions. The fee is credited toward a qualifying install booked within 90 days.
