What we do
A patio is only as good as what's under it. We dig to the right depth, lay and compact a real base, and pitch the surface so water runs away from the foundation, not toward it. Our clay swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries, and a patio set on loose fill can look great in May and sink by August.
We build with concrete pavers, flagstone and chopped stone. Recent work includes a flagstone walkway in Kilgore with chopped stone borders and path lighting, a checkerboard paver patio with gravel joints off a covered porch, also in Kilgore, and a 475 square foot Cherokee flagstone patio in White Oak built around a chopped stone fire pit, with one corner raised on a chopped stone wall.

What sinks patios in East Texas
Most patio failures here come from the dirt, not the stone. Much of this area is sandy loam over red clay, and the clay moves. It swells after heavy spring rain and shrinks in a dry August. A patio laid on a thin bed of sand over that will settle, rock and split.
