What we do
Lawn maintenance is the basics done the same way every week. We mow, edge along the walks, driveway and beds, string-trim around everything the mower can't reach, and blow every hard surface clean. Clippings go back into the turf instead of into bags, where they hand a little nitrogen and moisture back to the soil.
The part most crews skip is the cut itself. We set the deck for the grass you have, not one height for every yard. Bermuda runs lower, St. Augustine never drops under three inches, and both go up in July. We take no more than a third of the blade at a time, keep blades sharp so the grass is sliced instead of torn, and change mowing direction so the turf doesn't rut. How the job goes
Mowing season in East Texas runs from about late March through October, with weekly cuts during peak growth and every other week as it slows. In peak growing weather a lawn wants a cut every five to seven days so you only ever take the top third. Starting in spring keeps the lawn out of the scalp-and-recover cycle that wrecks it by August.

July is when mowing height decides everything
Short grass grows short roots. Scalp a lawn to save a mow in July and the roots pull back to match, right when the top inch of our clay bakes dry by early afternoon. The shortest-mowed yards on the street are always the first ones to go crispy.
So we mow by grass type. Bermuda can run one to one and a half inches in spring, then goes up to about two to two and a half for summer. St. Augustine stays at three and a half to four inches all summer and never drops under three. If your yard has both, we cut them at different heights instead of splitting the difference. A taller stand also shades the soil, which keeps it cooler and holds water longer.
