What we do
Good hedge trimming is more than running a power trimmer across the top. We shape each hedge a little wider at the base than at the top so light reaches the lower branches, and we keep the natural form of the plant instead of shearing everything into the same box. A hedge that's narrower at the bottom goes bare and leggy underneath.
Timing matters as much as the cut. Hollies and boxwoods get shaped in early summer, after the spring flush hardens off. Azaleas get cut within a few weeks of finishing bloom, or you clip off next year's flowers. A hard shearing late in the season pushes tender growth that the first cold snap burns brown. Tarps go down before we start, and every clipping is bagged or hauled off when we leave.

How the job goes
Most East Texas hedges want two to three trims between spring and fall, when they put on the most growth. June is the clean window for hollies and boxwoods, and right after bloom is the only safe time for azaleas and mophead hydrangeas. Skip hard shearing in late fall, because the tender regrowth burns brown in the first cold snap.

Old wood or new wood decides when we cut
The same trim that pushes one shrub into a second round of flowers will erase next year's blooms on the one next to it. Azaleas and mophead hydrangeas set next year's buds on this year's stems within weeks of finishing their show. Cut them in July or later and you get a green bush with no color. Early to mid June is the last clean shot on azaleas.
Hollies, including the yaupons and dwarf yaupons planted all over East Texas, are forgiving and shape well in June. The catch is berries. A hard June shearing trims off some of the berries that would color up in December, so if you keep a holly for winter berries, we go lighter and accept a looser shape.

If you keep a holly for its red winter berries, trim it lighter, since heavy shearing cuts off part of the crop.
Can you bring back an overgrown hedge?
Usually, yes. We do hard rejuvenation cuts on shrubs that have gotten away from their owners, taking them back to a size and shape they can grow into. It can look rough for a season while it fills back in. Some plants handle it better than others, so we'll tell you on the walkthrough if yours will come back or should be replaced.
Do you haul away the trimmings?
Yes. Tarps go down before we start, and every clipping is raked up, blown out of the beds and hauled off when we finish. You won't be left with a pile at the curb. Debris volume is part of the quote, so a big rejuvenation job with a lot of brush is priced with the haul-off already in it.
