What we do
A good mulch job is mostly prep. We re-cut the bed edge so grass can't creep in and pull every weed by the root, because mulch hides weeds, it doesn't kill them. Then we loosen the top of the soil so water can reach the roots, and lay the mulch even, 1 to 1.5 inches deep, pulled back off stems and trunks.
We bring in bulk mulch by the yard for bigger jobs, so you pay for mulch and not packaging, and use bagged where access is tight. Shredded hardwood is the standard here. Cypress breaks down slower, dyed black or brown gives more contrast, and pine straw is there if that's your look. On a refresh we match what's already in the bed so it breaks down evenly.

How the job goes

Why we use half the mulch the calculator says
Every online calculator says three inches. That number comes from up north, where snow packs mulch down over the winter. We don't get snow loads here, and inches two and three just get buried where nobody sees them.

Should I put landscape fabric under mulch?
No. Mulch breaks down into soil, and on fabric that soil sits on top of the sheet, right where wind-blown weed seed lands and sprouts. The roots punch through, and pulling a weed tears up the fabric with it. Edge the bed and mulch at the right depth instead. Under river rock or gravel, fabric is the right call.
